About the test

What is biological age?

Biological age is an estimate of how old your body seems at a molecular level, as opposed to your age in years (your chronological age). zeitlens estimates it from DNA methylation: chemical marks on your DNA that change in characteristic ways as we age.

How is biological age different from my age in years?

Your chronological age is simply the time since you were born. Your biological age estimate can be higher or lower than that. A single estimate is a snapshot; it does not describe your health and is not a diagnosis.

Is this a medical test?

No. zeitlens is a wellness service and not a medical device. The test is not intended to detect, predict, monitor or treat any disease. If you have health concerns, please talk to your doctor.

Which epigenetic clocks do you use?

We compute four published clocks: Horvath (2013), PhenoAge (2018), GrimAge (2019) and DunedinPACE (2022). Each was developed differently, which is why your report shows them side by side. You can read more on our science page.

Do you read my genes or my ancestry?

No. We measure DNA methylation, the chemical marks on your DNA. We do not offer ancestry analysis or tests for inherited conditions.

Who is the test for?

zeitlens is designed for healthy adults aged 18 and over who are curious about how they age.

Sample and results

How do I take the sample? Does it hurt?

You prick your fingertip with the lancet in the kit and let a small device soak up a few drops of blood. Most people feel a short pinch. The sample dries in minutes and you send it back by post.

How long until I get my results?

Usually within 4 weeks after your sample arrives at the lab. We let you know by email when your report is ready in your portal.

How precise is the result?

Like every measurement, epigenetic clocks include some technical variation, and different clocks give different estimates. Your report explains how much a value can vary, so you can tell a meaningful difference from normal fluctuation.

Can my biological age change?

DNA methylation patterns do change over time. A single test cannot tell you why your estimate is what it is, or what would change it for you personally. Repeating the test after some time shows how your estimates develop.

Privacy and data

Where is my data stored?

All data is hosted in the EU and never transferred outside the EU. Your sample only carries an ID number; your name and your lab data are linked through a separately stored key.

Do you use my results for marketing or research?

We never use your results for marketing. We only use data for research if you give separate, optional consent, which you can withdraw at any time.

Can I have my data deleted?

Yes. You can access your data, withdraw your consent and request deletion at any time. Our privacy policy explains how.
